what is HSK?

HSK stands for Hànyǔ (Chinese) Shuǐpíng (level) Kǎoshì (test), the Pinyin* version of 汉语水平考试. It is China's only official test for Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers. The HSK consists of 6 levels, from HSK1 to HSK6. The result of the exam is widely recognised and accepted internationally.

The test is administered by Hanban, an agency of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It is also in charge of the Confucius Institutes.

*Pinyin:  the official romanization system for Standard Mandarin Chinese

The result of HSK tests can be used to…

  1. define your Mandarin level

  2. prove Chinese language proficiency to employers

  3. to apply for Confucius Institute Scholarships (CIS).

  4. Apply for universities in China

Reviews by Students

  • Adam Roi ( New Zealand )

“I have been studying with Yan for several months and she is by far the best Laoshi I’ve ever studied with. I live in New Zealand and I’ve had 2 Mandarin teachers here in New Zealand before. They were pretty good but the curriculum framework was a bit outdated which made learning a bit of a challenge. At first I was a bit reluctant to learn with someone in another country but I had seen quite a bit of Yan’s content online and her style of explaining things made learning fun. Yan is an astute teacher, she knows how to maintain the perfect balance of pushing you without making you feel too far out of your comfort zone but the most amazing thing about Yan’s teaching style is that you feel super safe to make mistakes. In fact, she encourages that. She has a great sense of humour too and she brings a wonderful energy to teaching. Her lessons are structured without feeling rigid or overly prescriptive and her content is highly relevant for contemporary Chinese culture. So if you’re looking for an amazing Laoshi then I highly recommend Yan. She’s the best.”

  • Steve Morris (United Kingdom)

“Yan is a fantastic teacher. I have never progressed so far with my Chinese until I started learning with Yan. She's patient and makes lessons fun and relevant to real life situations which makes it easier to remember. She sets clear goals and expectations for each lesson. I would highly recommend anyone considering learning Chinese to sign up with Yan. It's money well spent.”

  • Micheal. Saver (United States)

“Yan is an incredible and caring teacher. She is very patient and encouraging, which makes learning a lot easier. She is also great at explaining the “why” behind certain things in Chinese and how they differ from English, but also the cultural norms and what you'd really say without sounding awkward to native speakers. With Yan, I’ve learned more, faster in 1 month than in triple that time with Duolingo. Highly recommend lessons with Yan.”

  • Benjamin. Redhead (United Kingdom)

“I chose to study Mandarin with Yan firstly due to seeing her explanations in her Instagram content. I found the explanations there clear and informative, following this I found she has a background in teaching at the Confucius institute. As I had previously been to the Confucius institute at my university I believed the lessons would be professional and informative, I was not disappointed. Yan is a great teacher who can explain concepts very easily as well as planning lessons around your needs and making the learning process entertaining. I would recommend Yan as a teacher to anyone looking to learn Chinese as I believe her teaching methods can help anyone learn quicker and stay committed to learning.”

Feel really lucky to have come across Yan 老师 on instagram!

She was able to re-introduce me to the language and make me fall in love with it all over again. Our classes are adapted to my needs, she does not hesitate to explain things over and always pushes me to do better every class. Thanks to her, I feel confident in my abilities of mastering the language.
